Sunday Mornings

8:00 am ~ Scripture Study of the Day

Each Sunday morning we gather in the Parlor to enjoy freshly brewed coffee, homemade coffee cake, and thoughtful conversation centered on the Bible passages for the morning worship service. Why not join us for what is always a time of friendship, encouragement, and greater appreciation for the words of scripture?

Location: PARLOR, led by Dr. Deborah Watson,

 9:30 am ~ The Purpose Driven Life: A Six-Session Video-Based Study (INTERGENERATIONAL)

You are about to embark on a journey of discovery. Together, we are going to discover together the answer to life's most fundamental question: 'What on earth am I here for?' And here's a clue to the answer: 'It's not about you ... You were created by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. It is only in God that we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance, and our destiny. Every other path leads to a dead end. The Purpose Driven Life Small Group Curriculum is a six-week, video-based small group study of The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren---the book Publishers Weekly declared the 'bestselling nonfiction hardback in history.' The six video lessons are taught by Rick Warren, and are supplemented by small group discussion material in the accompanying study guide. When combined with the reading of The Purpose Driven Life, this study provides the opportunity to discuss the implications and applications of these life-changing truths. You'll see the big picture of what life is all about and begin to live the life God created you to live.

This intergenerational class begins on February 5th and is open to anyone who is 14 or older.  We hope this will be a great opportunity for folks of different ages and life situations to come and discuss a topic that is common to us all!

Location: PARLOR, led by Youth Ministry Intern Dan Wonneberger

9:30am ~ The Prodigal God: Finding Your Place at the Table

Do you know the parable of the “Prodigal Son”?  It’s all about the “bad boy” who left with his fathers riches, squandered them, saw his failure and repented, and was restored to the family at a party, right?  Come with us on Sunday mornings for the next six weeks and let Tim Keller open this parable to its fullest extent. There are two other players in this drama that need to be understood:  The elder brother and the father. This parable is about being lost and being found. Could it be that both brothers were lost and only the father could bring them home? This will be a great time of discussion about our own particular brand of lostness, and how we might better savor the opportunity of being at home.

Location: GYM, led by Norm Johanson

10:30am ~ Human Trafficking in Our Backyard (Jan 15 - Feb 19)

What does human trafficking look like?  How can we become change agents here at home, in our own backyards?  Join us for lively guided discussion about these and other questions.  We’ll be using a new book by Nita Belles, In Our Backyard: A Christian Perspective on Human Trafficking in the United States.  The book takes us into the lives of actual victims, survivors and traffickers.  It also invites us to examine ourselves, and offers ways we can become involved right now in fighting this modern-day slavery.
If possible, please use the sign-up sheet to register for the course.  Books will be available for purchase ($15) at our first class meeting.  Check out customer reviews at Amazon.com.

Location: Parlor, led by Dr. Elouise Renich Fraser

  • How to minister effectively to others in prayer

Walking the Gospel: Examining the Hurdles of Personal and Corporate Christian Outreach (7:00-8:00pm):

We have all heard Jesus' command to go and make disciples of all nations, yet our daily lives are so full of other activities and competing priorities that we seldom walk through our daily routine with the goal of taking the good news of redemption and grace out to the world. If you desire to develop a more outreach-focused lifestyle, are open to examining your personal struggles in this aspect of life in Christ, and want to do something that will effect change in the world around you, then join us on Wednesday nights at 7pm in the Chapel. Our format will be a discussion-based study in which we utilize the Scriptures as we seek to discern the things that hinder us from following through with the work Jesus commissioned us to do.

Location: CHAPEL, led by Ryan Braddock & John Deaton

DISCIPLE I: A 34-week Survey Course of the Whole Bible (7:00-9:00pm)

Pastor Steve is leading a DISCIPLE I Bible Study that started last September. The course will meets Wednesday nights, September 2011 through early June 2012 (following the church year or school year).  Each class includes a DVD overview by a professor or pastor, some teaching by Pastor Steve, discussion and prayer. The course also includes about 30 minutes of daily study in the Bible and a workbook. Here’s a great description of what this Bible study does:

“Meditation is the aspect of spiritual reading that trains us to read scripture as a connected, coherent whole, not a collection of inspired bits and pieces.” ~ Eugene Peterson

Location: PARLOR, led by Pastor Steve
